About the Video:
Strong cases against lethal autonomy weapons (LAWS) have been made from a multitude of different perspectives, all being generally countered by the broader concept of national security. Despite years of discussions, we seem no closer to consensus. It is more important than ever to go beyond abstract discussions and to start talking specifically about existing weapon systems, recent technology advances, and overall the system characteristics which are the causes of concern.

About the Speaker:
Ryan Gariepy is a Canadian engineer, roboticist, and technology entrepreneur. He co-founded Clearpath Robotics with Matt Rendall, Bryan Webb, and Patrick Martinson in 2009, and subsidiary OTTO Motors in 2015. Gariepy currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer of both Clearpath Robotics and OTTO Motors, as a founding board member of Open Robotics, and as Co-Chair of the Canadian Robotics Council.

Recorded at the Workshop on Addressing Ethical and Technical Challenges in the Development, Use and Governance of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems during the 2022 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA).

Produced in partnership with the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (https://www.ieee-ras.org/).

Recording funded in part by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation (https://www.uefoundation.org/).
