Speaker: Carol Smith, Sr. Research Scientist, Human-Machine Interaction, Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute

Ethics discussions abound, but translating “do no harm” in technical work is frustrating at best, and obfuscatory at worst. Implementing ethics is intimidating work and new to most teams. This talk will teach participants how to wield their preferred technology ethics code to make technology that is accountable, de-risked, respectful, secure, honest and usable. The presenter will introduce the topic of ethics, and how particularly with regard to AI systems, and other emerging technologies, the lack of attention on ethics has led to harmful circumstances.

The speaker will then step through a user experience (UX) framework to guide development teams successfully through this process. The audience will learn about techniques to increase speculation in the team’s work and an actionable checklist that they can begin using immediately to implement trustable technologies.
