About the Video: As facial recognition becomes more prevalent, there is a need to address the related benefits and challenges. This panel of international biometrics experts discusses these aspects of this increasingly ubiquitous technology.

About the Panelists:

- Michael C. King joined Florida Institute of Technology's Harris Institute for Assured Information as a Research Scientist in 2015 and holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Computer Engineering and Sciences. Prior to joining academia, Dr. King served for more than 10 years as a scientific research/program management professional in the United States Intelligence Community. While in government, Dr. King created, directed, and managed research portfolios covering a broad range of topics related to biometrics and identity to include: advanced exploitation algorithm development, advanced sensors and acquisition systems, and computational imaging. He crafted and led the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity's (IARPA) Biometric Exploitation Science and Technology (BEST) Program to transition technology deliverables successfully to several Government organizations.

- Dr. Katina Michael is a professor at Arizona State University, holding a joint appointment in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and School of Computing, Informatics and Decisions Systems Engineering. She is also the director of the Society Policy Engineering Collective (SPEC) and the Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society. Katina is a Public Interest Technology advocate who emphasizes privacy and security by design. Katina has been funded by the Australian Research Council in the field of location-based services regulation, and the National Science Foundation for research into smart cities and the future of work. Together with her husband MG Michael, she has pioneered the concept of uberveillance in the context of smart applications and associated unintended consequences. Katina has been a board member of the Australian Privacy Foundation since 2008, is a board member of the IEEE Society on the Social Implications of Technology, and Council on RFID, and Working Group Chair of the IEEE P2089. In 2017 Katina hosted a national security workshop on Biometrics and Regulation https://www.katinamichael.com/sins17/ which preceded the Australian Federal Government's "The Capability" investment.

- Dr. Richa Singh is a Professor at IIT-Jodhpur, India, and an Adjunct Professor with IIIT-Delhi and West Virginia University, USA. She co-edited the book Deep Learning in Biometrics and has delivered tutorials on deep learning and domain adaptation. Her areas of interest are pattern recognition, machine learning, and biometrics. Dr. Singh is also the Vice President (Publications) of the IEEE Biometrics Council and an Associate Editor-in-Chief of Pattern Recognition, and Area/Associate Editor of several journals. She is a fellow of IAPR and a Senior Member of IEEE and ACM.

- Mark A. Vasquez (moderator) is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with over 25 years of experience in association management at IEEE. He serves as the program manager for IEEE TechEthics, a program that drives conversations about the ethical and societal impacts of technology. In this capacity, he works to develop relationships with others in the technology ethics community, produces events, convenes thought leaders, and more. Mark is an engineering graduate of The Cooper Union.

Recorded on 25 August 2020 as part of the IEEE TechEthics Conversations Series.
