About the Event: "New Technologies, Ethics and Policy Engagement for Sustainable Development" is a new series of online events conceived by IEEE TechEthics and the UN Department of Economic & Social Affairs (UN-DESA) as a way to facilitate and share technology solutions and promote substantive discussions among policy makers, engineers, legal experts, ethicists, social scientists, and others on a variety of topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals. This event in the series focused on Health & Human Well-Being.

About the Speakers:

- Paolo Bonato, Ph.D., serves as Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston MA. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, an Associate Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Boston University College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. He has held Adjunct Faculty positions at MIT, the University of Ireland Galway, and the University of Melbourne. His research work is focused on the development of rehabilitation technologies with special emphasis on wearable technology and robotics. Dr. Bonato served as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal on NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation. He serves as a Member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics and as Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology. Dr. Bonato served as an Elected Member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) AdCom (2007-2010) and as IEEE EMBS Vice President for Publications (2013-2016). He served as President of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (2008- 2010). He received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering from Universita` di Roma “La Sapienza” in 1995.

- Dr. Sanna Gaspard has a passion for entrepreneurship, healthcare, medical devices, and innovation. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Miami in Miami, FL (‘04). She completed her Masters (’05) and PhD (’11) in BME at Carnegie Mellon University. While earning her graduate degrees she founded and served as CEO of two biotech companies, TLneoCare, LLC and Rubitection Inc, to commercialize her innovations. As CEO she developed the business strategy, IP strategy, and raised initial financing. She has ideated novel technology for infant physiotherapy, vascular surgery, and wound care. She has received recognition and awards including being selected as a finalist for the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards (’13), a semi-finalist for the Big C competition (’14), a finalist for the Mass Challenge Business accelerator in Boston, and taking 1st place at the 3 Rivers Investment Venture Fair’s Technology showcase (‘11). Her vision is to make the Rubitect Assessment System the global standard solution for early bedsore detection and management.

- Richard A. Roehrl is a scientist, economist and policy analyst. At present, he is a Senior Economic Affairs Officer in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs where he is responsible for science, technology and infrastructure issues. He works towards strengthening the science-policy interface and has supported the creation of a number of new entry points for science and technology stakeholders at the United Nations. In particular, he initiated the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism and the UN Global Sustainable Development Report, among others. Mr. Roehrl has advised governments, supported negotiations and engaged with science communities on a wide range of issues. He has led analytical work and assessments on sustainable development, technology change and foresight, emerging science, cross-border infrastructure, energy, climate and scenario analysis. Mr. Roehrl received his education from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the University of Oxford, the University of London, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

- Randi Sumner has almost thirty years of experience shepherding membership organizations in a wide variety of industries towards success. She has worked with non-profit organizations ranging from those with almost no staff and minimal budget to those with approximately 1,000 employees and half a billion in revenue. Sumner has led numerous strategic business development initiatives at IEEE servicing over 430,000 members of both IEEE and it’s more than 50 Technical Communities since 2007. Throughout her career, Sumner has successfully envisioned and initiated new, uncharted, and profit-driven “bootstrap startup” projects within a wide variety of mission-driven associations. The impact of her role in several projects helped to transform business models as well as drive energy into stagnant membership or revenue concerns. Currently, she holds the position of Senior Director, Strategy & Entrepreneurship for the IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional society where she spearheaded the launch of IEEE’s Entrepreneurship initiative. This first-of-its-kind IEEE initiative inspires a global community for technology founders, engineers working in startups, as well as the vendors and funders helping to scale these businesses. Her efforts have brought the IEEE’s global resources to engineering-driven entrepreneurs while inspiring new resources, event innovations, virtual communities, and an IEEEtv video channel dedicated to startups. Sumner is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a cum laude graduate with an honors thesis on non-verbal communication from Brandeis University.

- Prior to his role at Fluxergy as Chief Commercial Officer, Dr. Ali Tinazli has been leading the corporate-wide, global strategy for Healthcare and Life Sciences for Hewlett-Packard (HP Inc.) and built a new life sciences business at SONY in his earlier career. He also currently serves as Board Member and Angel Investor at various start-up companies ranging from cyber security and digital health to oncology. Dr. Ali Tinazli has a deep background in the science and business of biomedicine and healthcare.

- Mark A. Vasquez (moderator) is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with over 25 years of experience in association management at IEEE. He currently serves as the program manager for IEEE TechEthics, a program that drives conversations about the ethical and societal impacts of technology. In this capacity, he works to develop relationships with others in the technology ethics community, produces events, convenes thought leaders, and more. Mark is an engineering graduate of The Cooper Union.
