About the Video: Sound policies that can regulate and facilitate the use of emerging and mature technologies are a key part of tech development. This panel addresses why policy discussions are essential for leveraging technology for a better tomorrow.

About the Panelists:

- Adriana Bankston is Chief Outreach Officer at the Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG), a non-profit and interdisciplinary peer review publication serving as a vehicle for early career researchers to publish on science policy topics. Adriana also serves as Co-Director of the Policy Taskforce at Future of Research (FoR), a non-profit organization that empowers early career scientists. More recently, Adriana became a Biomedical Workforce & Policy Research Investigator at the STEM Advocacy Institute (SAi), a think-tank building tools to expand pathways of access between science and society. By day, Adriana is a Principal Legislative Analyst in the University of California (UC) Office of Federal Governmental Relations.

- Flavia Dinca is the current Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals program, having previously served as the team’s Vice-Chair for Communications and Regions 7-10 Representative in 2017-2018. In addition, Flavia is part of IEEE’s European Public Policy Committee, working on enhancing collaborations between European policy makers and technologists, as well as the IEEE Ad Hoc on Healthy Volunteer Pipelines, which aims to improve the volunteering ecosystem within IEEE. Outside IEEE, Flavia is about to finish her InfoSec degree at Stockholm University, focusing on cyber-physical security of smart grids.

- Ali Kashif Bashir is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor and Course Leader at the Department of Computing and Mathematics, Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. He is also with School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, National University of Science and Technology, Islamabad (NUST) as an Adjunct Professor and School of Information and Communication Engineering, University of Electronics Science and Technology of China (UESTC) as an Honorary Professor and Chief Advisor of Visual Intelligence Research Center, UESTC. He is a senior member of IEEE and Editor-in-chief of the IEEE Future Directions Technology Policy & Ethics Newsletter.

- Mark A. Vasquez (moderator) is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with over 25 years of experience in association management at IEEE. He serves as the program manager for IEEE TechEthics, which drives conversations about the ethical and societal impacts of technology. In this capacity, he works to develop relationships with others in the technology ethics community, produces events, convenes thought leaders, and more. Mark is an engineering graduate of The Cooper Union.
