Dr. Peter Fischer of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory discusses how artificial intelligence is reshaping magnetism research, accelerating discovery, enabling automation, and introducing new challenges and risks for the field.

Artificial intelligence is already influencing magnetism research by changing how problems are approached, how data is prepared, and how experiments are designed. In this presentation, Dr. Peter Fischer outlines AI fundamentals, emphasizing that meaningful progress depends on high‑quality, well‑structured data, reproducibility, and close collaboration between domain experts and computing scientists. He highlights examples from the Materials Project and the A‑Lab, where AI accelerates discovery, guides exploration of complex phase spaces, and enables autonomous closed‑loop experimentation.

Fischer also discusses early applications in predicting ultrafast spin dynamics, identifying low rare‑earth magnetic materials, and screening large parameter spaces for promising compositions. He concludes by examining challenges such as data preparation, model transparency, and integration into laboratory workflows, along with risks including over‑reliance on automated decision‑making and the limits of AI in making genuine scientific discoveries. Throughout the talk, he stresses that human intuition, creativity, and critical thinking remain essential as AI becomes increasingly embedded in magnetism research.
